How to Keep Your Toilet Looking Like New

How to Keep Your Toilet Looking Like New

The bathroom may not be the most glamourous room in your home but it should be kept clean to look and feel sanitary. One of the main components of a clean restroom is a clean and new looking toilet. You want your guests to feel comfortable when using your restroom. If your toilet looks old, rusted or unhygienic they may become hesitant to use it. It is important for your restroom and toilet to look nice not only for you and your family but also potential house guests. At Richardson Plumbing we are always looking for new ways to bring convenience to our customers which is why we have provided a few tips to help keep your toilet looking like new.

The first thing to remember when making your toilet appear new and fresh is to keep it clean. This means cleaning it often.  Part water and part vinegar mixtures are a great and easy way to leave your toilet with a sparkle. Baking soda also cleans and deodorizes your toilet efficiently. Both of these mixtures work well for the inside and the outside of your toilet. By removing rust stains and rings around the toilet bowl you will make your toilet look new. To remove rust, try scrubbing vigorously to the inside of the toilet bowl with hydrogen peroxide for a couple of minutes. Make sure you are using the correct toilet bowl brush. Purchasing a sturdy and easier to use brush is the way to go.

If you have been scrubbing and cleaning and you find your toilet does not look sparkling it may be time to replace it altogether especially if it also has scratches or cracks. Scratches in the toilet bowl will become harder to maintain as time goes by and they get larger. A toilet with many scratches should be replaced to save you time and money with maintenance in the long run.  If your toilet has cracks it does not only look unattractive and old but it can also result in a huge mess such as leaking. If your toilet is older, it most likely does not have the advancements that a newer model has. Newer style toilets are made differently to ensure complete simplicity and comfort.  If you are wanting your toilet to look new, you may need to replace it.

Should You Get a Stand-Up Shower or a Shower and Tub Combo?

If you are trying to decide the best shower or tub for your home it is important to fully understand all the benefits of both. Both options are excellent choices for different kinds of homeowners, and with Richardson Plumbing you can’t go wrong either way. We will inform you of each choice and our experts are available to answer any questions you may have. At Richardson Plumbing we will provide you with the best possible customer service to give you the best possible experience when dealing with your home’s plumbing.

The shower and tub combination is the most widely used version of both showers and bathtubs. The reason the shower and tub combo is so commonly used is because they give you both options in one. Bath tubs are great for relaxing and unwinding after a long day. The heat is excellent for soothing sore muscles. Jets and whirlpool features are great for relaxation. Most people agree they fall asleep very quickly and stay asleep longer after a peaceful bath. The shower and tub combo is ideal for families with small children. Baths are fun for kids and easy for parents. So much enjoyment happens for a child in a bath tub. With toys and bubbles it can be an entertaining way to get your kids clean. Shower and tub combinations are very convenient and are the best choice for many families.

The stand-up shower is ideal for people with mobility issues or injuries. They help with safety. Rails and bars can easily be installed to prevent slips and falls. In a stand-up shower you have the option to have a sit down feature which also is an effective way to prevent falls. Benches and chairs allow you to sit down while bathing without having to climb into a hazardous tub. Depending on the size you select, generally showers take up less space than a bath tub would. This gives you larger bathroom space. Stand up showers also give you the option to add luxurious stream jets and rain showers. If you like the larger shower area and the bells and whistles available, Richardson Plumbing can help you make sure all of your plumbing is hooked up correctly.

If you can’t quite make a choice and are having trouble deciding, our professionals at Richardson Plumbing are available to help. We want to make sure you are completely satisfied with your purchase. Bathroom Remodeling Trends in 2017

Bathroom Remodeling Trends

Many bathrooms seem dull and lifeless, generic in design and lacking a sense of design focus. Because bathrooms are used for a functional purpose, many of them are looked over when it comes to design and décor. Don’t let your bathroom fall into this boring category, make 2017 the year your bathroom shines. Let Richardson Plumbing, your best plumbing choice in Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati, and the surrounding area, show you some of the bathroom remodeling trends in 2017 to help you create the bathroom of your dreams.

Smart Storage

For a practical and beautiful way to boost your bathroom style, consider adding smart storage areas to your bathroom. A beautiful bathroom is one that is organized, a place for every towel, lipstick tube, and bottle of shampoo. Choose furniture that has lots of organized and smart storage so you feel relaxed knowing that everything that would normally litter your counter space now has a place. In addition to making your life easier with added organization for your possessions, storage is a great way to add character to a space. Open shelves give you opportunity for additional storage but also doubles to add personal touches to your bathroom, like pictures and small décor items that will tie everything together.

Freestanding Tubs

Freestanding bathtubs have been steadily growing in popularity for the last few years and it is not likely that this trend will go away any time soon. Freestanding tubs allow you to make your bathtub the focal point of your design. Surround the tub with marble or hardwood, or elevate the tub on a pedestal or platform to make your eyes drawn to the deviation. As far as the shape goes, anything that meets your aesthetic needs is best. Round, rectangular, circular, or oval, all shapes and sizes will work in a master bathroom design.

Natural Elements

Bring nature into your bathroom for a calming and organic vibe. While white bathrooms are still in trend, and will likely never fall out of style, incorporating natural textures and elements into your bathroom is an easy way to add some tranquility and warmth to your space. Hardwood floors, wooden cabinets, and woven wood shades are all great ways to incorporate this trend. If you are looking for a natural feel but on a smaller scale, consider wooden furnishings, like benches and towel bars, woven wooden baskets for towels and storage, and wooden planters with fake or real plants. These small elements will add a dash of organic serenity to your space or soften a harsh, modern look.

The 411 on Framed Vs. Unframed Shower Doors

shower door

If you are remodeling your bathroom, the decision of rather you should utilize a framed or frameless shower door is a big one to make because it will influence the entire feel of your bathroom. While frameless shower doors have become popular, framed doors are still an excellent choice, and it is still important to weigh the pros and cons of each of these styles so you can choose the perfect option for your home. Let Richardson Plumbing, offering bathroom remodeling in Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati, and the surrounding areas, show you the differences between these two shower door styles to make your decision easier.

Framed Shower Doors

Framed shower doors usually feature aluminum or composite frames that surround a thick sheet of textured or tempered glass. Frames can be coated in a metallic finish, like bronze or nickel, depending on the style that suits your décor. In addition to surrounding the sheet of glass, the frame is on the operable parts of the door and enclosure as well, like the joints, tracks, and top and bottom of the area. The sweeps and magnetic hardware keep the frame in a water-tight fir around the door, that prevents water from leaking onto the floor outside of the shower or bathtub enclosure. While there are many benefits to framed shower doors, like the customization and decorative glass options, the doors will only open outward which restricts layout options for your bathroom.

Frameless Shower Doors

Frameless shower doors and semi-framed doors, feature a sheet of tempered glass that is attached to a function point at either the bottom, top, or a side. Frameless shower doors give you a wider range of design options because the size of the door can be customized to meet any specific décor needs you have, like choosing rather the door will open inwards or outwards depending on the layout of your room. Frameless shower doors will not block the view of your tile work, are easy to clean because there are very few attached points, and will provide your bathroom with a modern, open feel. While frameless shower doors are aesthetically pleasing to many, the lack of frame can cause problems when it comes to sealing in water. Because there is no water tight seal at the bottom or sides of the door, it is very easy for these shower doors to leak and thus restricts where you can place the shower head.

If you have more questions about which type of shower door is right for you, contact Richardson Plumbing today. At Richardson Plumbing we can help you through your entire bathroom remodeling process, from choosing which shower door is right to ensuring that your remodeling process runs smoothly and efficiently. As a company that has been in business for over 20 years, a proud recipient of an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and a member of Angie’s List, you can rest easy knowing that your bathroom remodeling project is being handled by some of the best.

What’s New In Kitchen Design Trends

Kitchen Design Trends

The most frequently used room in the home is the kitchen. Aside from being a place that needs to be built for function, the kitchen is a place where everyone gathers and is always much more than just a place to eat and prepare meals. As kitchen design trends have evolved, you may find yourself feeling more and more cramped in your space. An easy remedy is a remodel to bring your kitchen back up to your standards. Keep your kitchen up to date and appealing to anyone who enters by remodeling to meet all of your needs. Richardson Plumbing, experienced plumbers serving Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati, and the surrounding areas, can show you what’s new in kitchen design trends to help you decide if a remodel is just what your kitchen needs.

Kitchen Design Trends: Open Plans

The most widespread kitchen design trend is the pull towards an open kitchen plan in the modern home. Open floor plans have been popular for quite a while, but this trend has no end in sight. Open floor plans make your home appear larger and brighter because there are no walls cutting rooms into smaller areas and blocking light or your view through your home. The same idea applies to open concept kitchens. Open kitchens keep people connected in the home, even when some people are cooking and others are not. This open environment is excellent for families because the kitchen transforms into a multipurpose room with distinct areas that everyone is comfortable in.

Color Contrast

Color contrast among your furnishing in your kitchen is a trend that is on the rise. Contrasting colors, like bold accent colors with muted neutrals, or black and white, will make your kitchen seem more vibrant. In addition to adding eye catching color and dimension, color contrast in the kitchen will make your home look modern without the need for extremely modern hardware.

Gray is Great

Gray is the new “it” color for kitchens according to NKBA designers. Gray cabinets, gray paint, gray appliances, gray quartz or granite, whatever place you want to incorporate the color will work with many other textures and colors, like hardwoods and other painted materials. Gray color schemes will make your kitchen feel sleek and sophisticated but can also be accentuated with pops of other colors to make the color feel more alive.

Eco Friendly Kitchen Remodeling

Eco-friendly furnishings are the biggest trend throughout the entire home, not just in the kitchen. From lighting to window treatments to faucets and proper plumbing to avoid extra water waste, any way you can incorporate environmentally friendly designs will make your space in style.

If you are ready to start a full kitchen remodel to bring your home up to date, contact Richardson Plumbing for your plumbing remodeling needs. At Richardson Plumbing we have vast knowledge in kitchen remodeling and experience you can trust. Rather it’s working with you personally or with your interior designer or contractor, we can help assure that your project runs smoothly.

5 Tried and True Kitchen Remodeling Trends

kitchen remodeling trendsThese kitchen remodeling trends are here to stay.  As trends come and go, a few popular additions and color trends for the kitchen have survived the test of time.  As with most of your remodeling plans, the kitchen is another area where you don’t want to choose such trendy designs that you find the style outdated before it’s time.  Richardson Plumbing in Northern Kentucky can help with your kitchen remodeling ideas to make the most of your space, add the latest kitchen fixtures and plumbing.  Follow these kitchen remodeling trends and see which might work well in your kitchen.

  1. White or Gray Kitchen and Cabinets

White has been a popular pick for kitchen cabinetry for a few years.  Gray is starting to take hold.  Both are neutral enough that you really can’t go wrong.  White appliances are easy to clean and cheaper than stainless steel.  Many people go with white throughout the entire Kitchen or choose a white with black accents.  When decorating with gray, you need to make sure you add bits of color to the overall scheme.  This makes sure your gray color doesn’t cast a cold ambiance in our Northern Kentucky climate.  Gray works well with a number of colors including:  red, yellow and green.

2.  Colored sinks

Color has been showing up in the kitchen in unexpected places.  From red toasters to colored utensils, you will find color adds a little fun to the kitchen.  Now you can find sinks that are done in a deep color too.  Upgrade your sink in style with a modern looking sink or an old fashion farmhouse look alike.   Coordinated back splashes and bold fixtures can add to the look.  Sinks themselves are more likely to be done in an apron-front design or a modern under the counter mount.

3.  Modern Refrigeration

As time goes on, people are beginning to rethink larger refrigerators. Some people are choosing smaller cabinet size refrigerators or many cooling areas to accommodate what ever is most needed in the area.  A refrigerator for wine and a second one to store soft drinks.  Maybe a special refrigeration system in the area where you are most likely to prep food.

4.  Home Automation

Choose cabinet doors that open at the touch of a button or window treatments that operate by themselves.  There is no end to what can be added to your home automation.  Want the lights to come on in the evening even when you’re away from home?  And don’t forget touch-less faucets for hand free convenience.  When it comes to modern kitchen remodeling trends, some catchy gadgets are only going to get more and more popular.

5.  Granite Look Alike Countertops

For years granite countertops have been the trend but with the problem of sealing and staining, many people are choosing quartz to replace granite.  Laminate has also come a long way with rounded edges and larger patterns that mimic granite countertops for a fraction of the cost.

How To Put A Shower And Bathtub In A Small Bathroom

small bathroomYou’ve decided to take the plunge and remodel your bathroom and now recognize you have what seems like an insurmountable problem. You are very limited on space and you want both a bathtub and a shower. Don’t despair, for Bathroom Remodeling in Northern Kentucky call Richardson’s Plumbing. With over fifteen years of experience they can help you find a solution to your space dilemma.

The Issue-Fitting Both a Shower and a Tub in a Small Bathroom

Small square footage in the existing small bathroom is an issue that many homeowners face when they tackle remodeling a bathroom, and there are many things you will need to consider;

  • Aesthetics; will my finished product be pleasing to the eye?
  • Functionality; will my bathroom fixtures be usable in the configuration I’ve chosen? and
  • Building code specifications; have I left the required amount of space around the fixtures?

How Much Space Do I Need

How much space you will need hinges not only on your desire for both a bathtub and a shower, but also on the building codes in your state. Your remodeling consultant at Richardson’s Plumbing has the knowledge that you need, without having to plow through pages and pages of building code.

  • Did you know that any fixture in the bathroom needs to have at least 21 inches of space in front of it? Richardson’s knows.
  • Did you know that there are laws that govern how far a fixture is from the sink or the toilet? Richardson’s knows.
  • Did you know that if your shower is separate from the bathtub, its size is governed by law? And that if it is placed in a corner, the shower enclosure will have to be larger? Richardson’s knows.
  • Do you know how much space you will need so that your doors (including any shower door) will open properly? Richardson’s knows.
  • Do you know enough about plumbing to control expenditures by utilizing the existing supply and drainage systems? Richardson’s knows.

How to Start Your Design

Make your wish list first. Then the easiest way to begin your design is with pencil and paper. Make a scaled drawing of your space. Add any fixtures that currently exist and that you plan to keep. Using another piece of paper, make cut outs of additional fixtures you want to add. A standard tub is 60 inches X 30 inches x 14 inches, although a more popular length is 72. If this is a non-starter, there are Greek or Japanese style soaking tubs that take up less floor space, some as small as 48 inches. Have you considered combining your tub and shower? This will free up space also. What about; linen and toiletry storage, towel racks, toilet paper holders? Unless a house is custom made, bathrooms are rarely as large as we would like them to be. Put the fixtures that you use most frequently, the sink and toilet, closest to the door. If you are still coming up short space wise, there are several other options to consider.

Where Can I Find Extra Space

What is in the room next to your bathroom? Can you steal some square footage from that room? Sometimes a closet or hallway can donate a few feet without destroying its intended use. Utilize the corners where possible. Use a vanity with a shelf or underneath cabinet. Combining the tub and shower will obviously buy you space. What about a wall mounted faucet? If the faucet is placed on the wall, your vanity or sink can be narrower. More space found. Does your shower need a door or will a shower curtain work or can you just build a glass splash guard and skip the door altogether. Your experts at Richardson’s Plumbing will have design ideas for you. For most of us, if we haven’t seen it, we don’t know it exists. If you live in an older home and haven’t shopped showrooms, there may be many ideas your consultant can suggest.

How to Make a Small Bathroom Appear Larger

Once complete, your new bathroom will be the safe haven you have envisioned. You can hide the fact that it is small by using some decorating tips that will make your room appear larger than it is. Use large mirrors, decorate with large patterns, paint your walls in light colored shades, make the ceiling a darker color, it draws the eyes up and gives the illusion of height.

Richardson’s Plumbing is Kentucky’s choice for Bathroom Remodeling. Their wealth of knowledge and experience will have you enjoying your new bathroom in no time at all. For design consultations call Richardson’s Plumbing at (859) 371-2239.

What I Like About My New Kitchen

new kitchenMy husband and I decided that our home needed a facelift and started in the kitchen. The construction phase was disruptive but the results are wonderful. If you are planning for a kitchen remodel in the Greater Cincinnati area I have to tell you Richardson Plumbing knows their “stuff”. We love the results. When you start a project of this kind do your research. Most of us don’t know what we don’t know. Richardson Plumbing walked us through the design phase and gave us a lot of new features that we hadn’t thought of. We thought granite and cabinets for beauty; they helped us get functionality along with it.

A Quiet Kitchen For A Change

Listen to the sounds of your kitchen. Cupboard doors banging closed, noisy dishwasher, glaring overhead lights. All of those irritants went right out the window. Our cabinetry doors close without a sound due to whisper quiet door hinging. Our dishwasher is so quiet you barely hear it, and environmental friendly due to energy efficiency. And we have beautiful under and over the cabinet track lighting that fills the room with a warm glow.

Adding Your Favorite Features to Your Kitchen Remodel

kitchen remodelMy favorite kitchen features in my new kitchen are the hands-free gooseneck faucet, and the pull out spice racks next to the cooktop. I love to bake and remember making a mess of the faucet handle to get the water running to wash my hands. Now I just tap the faucet with the back of my arm and the water is there. We have tank less hot water in our house and it takes several minutes of running the water for it to come in hot. Richardson Plumbing put a small supplemental water heater under my new kitchen sink so not only do I have hands-free water, I have hands free hot water. I have two pull out spice racks next to my new cooktop. No more rooting through the cupboard and reading each label to find the spice you want.

Functional Cabinetry

kitchen remodelingRichardson’s was able to find space for several more cabinets, even utilizing the corner space for some deep cabinets that allow me to store less used kitchen equipment and glassware. I have drawers everywhere. Deep drawers for larger items and pull out drawers within the cabinets for instant look of contents, again no rooting around. The icing on the cake for me was the stand mixer pull out/flip up cabinet drawer. No more cluttered counter space here. And the placement of the drawer was awesome. Right next to the area I usually use for assembling ingredients when baking.

Kitchen Remodeling in Cincinnati

Our Cincinnati Plumber, Richardson’s, did the job right. From design through installation things couldn’t have gone smoother. Call today for a consultation on your new kitchen remodeling.
